ATA Elects New Officers
Robert J. Mather of Waukesha, Wisconsin, becomes the 17th
person since 1949 to be elected as ATA President.
According to the announcement made by Donald G. Beuthel,
chairman of the ATA committee of canvassers, all other
candidates appearing on the ballot published in the March-April
2004 issue of Topical Times were also elected. They
include:
Ranes C.
Chakravorty, M.D., of Salem, Virginia, was re-elected as ATA
first vice-president; and Caroline Scannell of Smithtown,
New York, was re-elected as ATA second vice-president, a
position in which she has served since 1998.
Catherine
Fechner of Maywood, New Jersey, was elected as ATA
secretary, becoming the first person ever to have served in this
position for three different terms over a period of 50 years.
She replaces James D. Crum of Arroyo Grande, California, who was
unable to continue as secretary for health reasons.
Dorothy
C. Smith of Lewisville, Texas, was elected as ATA treasurer,
a position that had been previously held by the new ATA
president Robert J. Mather. Dorothy Smith previously
served as ATA secretary 1984-1995, as ATA president 1996-2000,
and as a Board member 2000-2004 during which time she spent six
months operating ATA central headquarters while a new ATA
executive director was being selected.
Three of the
candidates for members of the ATA Board of Directors were
re-elected. They are George Griffenhagen of Vienna,
Virginia, who served as ATA president 1976-1979 and a Board
member since 1980; Jerome D. Husak of Sun City, Arizona,
founder of ATA, executive director 1949-1984, and a Board member
since 1984; and Alan J. Hanks of Aurora, Ontario, Canada,
who served as ATA president 1984-1987, and a Board member since
1987.
The final
candidate winning election to the ATA Board of Directors is
Dalene Thomas of Lakewood, Colorado, who served as ATA
secretary 1996-2000, and ATA president 2000-2004. She
replaces previous ATA Board member Dorothy Smith who was elected
as the new ATA treasurer.
The newly
elected officers will be formally installed on June 13, 2004,
during the ATA annual convention in Memphis, Tennessee.
