PRESS RELEASE

April 26, 2009

ATA’s NATIONAL TOPICAL STAMP SHOW ACTIVITIES

The National Topical Stamp Show 2009 being held at the Dayton Convention Center in Dayton, Ohio on June 12 – 14, will honor 100 years of U.S. Military Aviation. The show is sponsored by the American Topical Association, whose 60th anniversary coincides with this event.

In 1909 the U.S. Army purchased their first Wright Military Flyer. A reproduction of that craft will be on display at the U.S. Air Force Museum in Dayton as part of the celebration of this event. The all day tour on Monday, June 15, will feature this museum. Additionally, a U.S. Air Force Color Guard will open the show on Friday, June 12.

There will be a foreign First Day of Issue at the show. On Friday, a speaker from the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base will tell tales of the Air Force and will then help unveil the sheet of nine US military aircraft stamps along with a souvenir sheet of one from The Gambia, These will feature art by first time stamp artist, Lonnie Pickett of Massachusetts. The First Day pictorial cancel will feature a Wright Military Flyer as does the show logo.

The new US 64c Dolphin definitive will also have a First Day of Release at the show on Friday, June 12. Plans are underway for a ceremony for that as well, following the foreign First Day event. There will be a special USPS Cancel featuring a dolphin for use with the First Day of Sale of the 64c Dophin stamp.

On each day of the show there will be two flight related paper airplane contests; one for adults and one for children aged 14 and under. Prizes will be awarded for the plane that stays airborne the longest as well as for the one that travels the furthest. Children will be invited to color their planes afterwards at the youth table for additional awards for their designs.

A half day tour of some of the other sites within the Dayton area will be held on Thursday afternoon, February 11.

This year’s search through the expected 180 frames of exhibits will be a search for Amelia Earhart. Each person who finds the stamp portraying the famous aviatrix will enter the location number in a hopper for a drawing on Saturday at 2:00 PM for a $25 ATA Boy Buck bounty, good at any dealer’s table at the show, or the award can be used for ATA membership or other sales items. The purpose of this fun event is to encourage attendees to see the great array of topical exhibits at this show.

The heart of the show will be, as always, the dealers who will travel to the host city. 28 dealers are expected to bring not only topicals but a wide range of other stamps to this show. US, British Colonies and a wide variety of foreign stamps and covers will be available to collectors of all pursuits.

There will also be four tables of Silent Auction material available near the ATA table. At the ATA table you can meet the new Executive Director of the ATA, Vera Felts, see samples of all of the handbooks the ATA now has to offer, and obtain show covers which will be different for each day of the show. USPS cancellations on Friday will feature a Korean War era F-86 jet fighter and a current RQ-4 remotely controlled UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle). The cachet will feature the 1909 Wright Military Flyer and a 2009 F-35 Raptor stealth fighter.

Saturday, June 13, will have a US cancellation picturing the SR-71 Blackbird spy-plane and a U.S. Army UH-60A Blackhawk helicopter. The cachet will illustrate nine “Friend or Foe” illustrations with the answer to the two “Foe” aircraft” on the inside stuffer.

The Sunday cancel will feature the USS Macon airship of the 1930’s along with the P-6E biplane from the 1920s. The cachet will show ATA founder Jerry Husak as the pilot of an F-16, celebrating the 60th anniversary of the ATA which he founded in 1949.

Mr. Husak will be the featured speaker at the show banquet, reminiscing about the ATA and its history as topical collecting grew in acceptance through his early work.

The show will have free admission and is open to the public, as are most of the meetings and seminars to be held.
