ATA ADDS FIFTH COVER for NTSS2008
The American Topical Association has
scheduled three USPS Show cancels, each on different cachets, for their
next National Topical Show on June 13-15, 2008 in Clackamas, Oregon, a
suburb of Portland. Each commemorates an historical event: 50 years
since the US entered the Space Age with the first US satellite –
Explorer 1; 100 years since Robert Peary set out to locate the North
Pole; and 150 years since David Livingstone set out on his Zambesi
River expedition into Africa.
Additionally, an as yet to be identified
foreign nation has been scheduled to have a First Day of Issue on
Friday of the show for a sheet of four stamps, all related to
Exploration and Discovery in the Oregon Territory. The stamps have been
painted by Chris Calle, and the cachet features artwork of his father,
Paul Calle.
Now, with the recently announced
issuance of the first five stamps in a USPS series honoring US Flags on
Saturday, June 14th (Flag Day), a fifth special cover will be released
at NTSS 08 using the already established Saturday cancel, for the First
Day of Issue of these commemorative sized coil stamps. The First Day
Ceremony for the four foreign stamps will be held at 9:15 AM, Friday,
June 13th. The First Day Program for the Flag Coil stamps will be held
at noon on Saturday June 14th. Prices will appear later on the ATA
website, www.americantopicalassn.org .
This annual stamp show rotates to a
different city each year in order to allow more people to become aware
of the fun and education of building a collection on a topic of their
own choice. Topical collecting is fulfilling to those with a creative
bent who wish to add to their existing collection activity.
In addition to the covers, NTSS 08 will
feature a free presentation at the Friday First Day of Issue ceremony
by Oregon Public Historian, Mr. Richard H. Engeman. He will cover the
exploits of those early explorers featured on the new foreign stamps:
Francis Drake; Joel Palmer; Robert Gray; and Lewis and Clark.
On-line philatelic radio talk show host
Nancy Clark will provide a 9:00 AM presentation on Saturday morning
detailing the explorations of Lewis and Clark. This is an audio visual
show last given at Washington 2006.
A search among the exhibit pages for a
stamp showing the Oregon Trail will result in someone receiving $25 to
spend at the show on Saturday at 2:30PM. All of the above are in
conjunction with the show theme of Exploration and Discovery.
The ATA introduced the Roll a Six. Win a
DVD! Promotion at MegaShow in early March in which show attendees have
a chance to win a free ATA DVD presentation, a $10 value, simply by
rolling a six on a die at the ATA Table. By the time of this show, the
new promotion will have been held at SPRINGPEX in Virginia, NAPEX in
Washington, DC and two other shows prior to its being held at NTSS 08.
This promotion acquaints visitors to ATA Society tables with topical
collecting as well as with the ATA’s new DVD program for clubs and
individuals. The ATA now has twenty titles in their offering with two
more to be ready by the date of the National Topical Stamp Show. ATA
Handbooks and lists of checklists and articles on a wide range of
topics from the past 59 years of Topical Time will also be made
available to visitors. Many free meetings on a variety of topics will
also be held.
Vendor’s tables will include several
non-topical dealers so that the show will have something for everyone:
US, UN, Canada, Israel, US Plate Blocks, duck stamps, autographs,
postcards, British Empire, Europe, Asia, Scandinavia, postal history
and more will be represented along with topicals. Antiques and
Collectibles Insurance will also host a booth at this show. See the ATA
Website (www.americantopicalassn.org) for a listing of the dealers of
stamps, covers and postcards who will be participating at this event.
