Introduction Welcome to the course This is an introduction to one of the most fascinating areas of stamp collecting: collecting primarily on the basis of what is depicted on the stamp (or ancillary material). With more than 500,000 different postage stamps issued from 1840 to the present, what 60 years ago was the ability to collecting all stamps of the world issued to that time now is nearly an impossibility. So, collectors are faced with decisions as to how to pursue the hobby in ways that are both enjoyable and reasonable to the average person. With so many stamps issued over the years, you should have no difficulty matching any interest you have outside of stamp collecting with a stamp collection directly relating to that interest. Such an interest can range from the country of your family’s origin to your occupation or profession to views of where you have spent your vacations. Along the way can be developed interests in specific items from nature, examples of little-known cultures of the world, or just about anything else! |
