Some covers are know for the type of service they provide, such as

  • Mourning Covers
  • Balloon Mail, principally of the mid-19 th century
  • Catapult Mail, a ship-to-shore service
  • Paquebot Mail, for mail posted aboard a ship and carried to shore by paquebot
  • Pneumatic Post, for mail transported by underground pneumatic tubes
  • Rock Mail … nor particularly practical, but there were experiments

Free Frank Covers are those where the sender is exempt from paying postage and merely need to sign the upper left corner of the envelope, where the stamp would go. Today that service is reserved for the U.S. President, members of Congress, and military personnel in war zones.
